On occasion, Caterhams have been banned from race series around the world for the sole and simple reason that if they were allowed, nothing else would stand a chance of keeping up. And ours, stripped of all unnecessary equipment and shod with semi-slick tyres, are among the quickest of the lot. Perhaps 150bhp doesn’t sound like much, but in a car weighing roughly a third of a normal car, it goes a long, long way.

But more special even than its pace is the near-telepathic interaction between car and driver that it offers. The involvement it offers is so total that after a few laps you may no longer be able to tell where you stop and it starts.
